Dead Guy

Kegged on December 21, 2009.

I picked up several kits from Brewcraft; one of them was for Rogue's Dead Guy Ale. Other than what came in the kit, the only additional ingredient was Wyeast Pacman (1764) yeast. The following two images show the instructions that came with the Brewcraft kit (click on each image for a larger view).

For the most part I followed the instructions listed above. I will occasionally make small changes or simplifications but nothing that should change the outcome. Below is an image of the final product.

The original gravity was 1.064. The beer was in the primary container for 11 days and in the secondary container for eight days, for a total of 19 days. The final specific gravity measurement I have was 1.018; unfortunately I don't remember if I took this measurement when I transferred to the secondary or when I kegged the beer. This would result in an alcohol content of 6.1%.

This beer was great; it didn't taste exactly like the actual Dead Guy Ale, but it was very similar. It was the first beer I let sit in the secondary container for long enough, so it turned out pretty clear. I had a handful of relatives try my version and the real one side by side and the majority thought the kit version was better, although this was probably because the kit version didn't have as bold of a taste as the real version.
